Jack Kerouac – spotkania filmowe

Najsłynniejszy pisarz Beat Generation, poeta, artysta, podróżnik, głos Ameryki nie tylko z artystycznych kawiarni, ale i robotniczych barów, ulic, dworców czy pociągów towarowych, w których na gapę podróżował wzdłuż i wszerz kraju, bo „droga to życie”. Jack Kerouac urodził się 100 lat temu. To powód do świętowania na całym świecie. W Krakowie świętować będziemy podczas sześciu spotkań filmowych. Obejrzymy dokumenty, fabuły, długie i krótkie metraże. Będą mini wykłady, dyskusje i jazz! Ci, co nie znają, to poznają, a ci, co znają, to odkryją Jacka Kerouaca na nowo!

Przygotowanie / prowadzenie / organizacja:

Tematyką Beat Generation zajmuję się od kilkunastu lat. Napisałam o nich wiele artykułów, licencjat, magisterkę i prawie doktorat. Wielokrotnie byłam w Stanach Zjednoczonych, gdzie śladów Jack Kerouaca szukałam w archiwach, bibliotekach, księgarniach i zakątkach miast. Posiadam wiele materiałów, które z radością Wam pokażę, i trochę wiedzy, którą się podzielę. Dzięki kontaktom z beatnikowską społecznością zaprezentuję Wam filmy, których próżno szukać w innych miejscach w Polsce, oraz takie, których szukać można, ale szansa jest jeden na sto. Zapraszam!

Jona Mekas też urodził się 100 lat temu. Jego filmowy styl porównywany jest do stylu pisarskiego Kerouaca, a jeden z krytyków nazwał „Działa wśród drzew” „jednym z najbardziej osobistych i odkrywczych filmów bitnikowskiej awangardy”.

Pull My Daisy – „Pull My Daisy”, reż. Robert Frank, Alfred Leslie

Kultowy film i pozycja obowiązkowa dla fanów Beat Generation. To zwariowana historia pełna społecznych znaczeń i undergroundowego humoru. Z offu słyszymy głos Jacka Kerouaca (też autora scenariusza), na ekranie widzimy m.in. Allena Ginsberga, Gregory’ego Corso i Petera Orlovsky’ego, w tle leci muzyka Davida Amrama, a reżyserowali sławni: fotograf i malarz.

Ten film brytyjskiego duetu powstał specjalnie z okazji 100-lecia urodzin Jacka Kerouaca i w Polsce zostanie pokazany po raz pierwszy. Podczas ostatniego spotkania będzie też wiele niespodzianek!

Przedsięwzięcie jest realizowane ze środków pochodzących ze „Stypendium Twórczego Miasta Krakowa”.

Jack Kerouac — film meetings

The most famous writer of the Beat Generation; a poet, an artist, a traveler. The voice of America—not just that of artistic coffeeshops, but also working-class bars, streets, train stations and freight trains, which he used to stow away across the country, believing ‘the road is life’. Jack Kerouac was born 100 years ago today. A date celebrated around the world. In Kraków, we will be celebrating it with six film meetings. There will be documentaries, feature films and short movies. Also mini lectures, discussions… and jazz! Those who do not know Jack Kerouac will get to learn, and those who do will get to rediscover him.

A word from the organizer:

The Beat Generation has been my main focus for more than a dozen years. I have written numerous articles about it, as well as a bachelor’s thesis, a master’s thesis and maybe soon—a doctoral dissertation. I have traveled to the United States several times to look for traces of Jack Kerouac in various archives, libraries, bookstores and simply everywhere else. I have gathered a wide array of materials and some personal knowledge that I will be happy to share with you. Owing to my contacts within the Beat community, I will be able to introduce you to films that you simply wouldn’t find anywhere else in Poland; or maybe you would… but the chances would definitely be slim. Everyone’s welcome!

Documentary about Jack Kerouac — “On the Road with Jack Kerouac: King of the Beats”, dir. John Antonelli

We’ll start with a biography of the writer. One of the best documentaries about Kerouac, featuring archival footage, a fictionalized history and contributions from his friends, including many Beat Generation writers and poets.

New American Cinema — “Guns of the Trees”, dir. Jonas Mekas / English w/Polish subtitles

Jonas Mekas was born 100 years ago too. His cinematic style has been compared to that of Kerouac’s writing, and one critic even described “Guns of the Trees” as ‘probably one of the most personal and revealing films of the intellectual, beat and hip fringe of society of America’.

Pull My Daisy — “Pull My Daisy”, dir. Robert Frank, Alfred Leslie

A cult classic and must-see title for Beat Generation fans. A crazy tale full of social references and underground humor, directed by two famous visual artists. From off screen we hear the voice of Jack Kerouac (the author of the script); on screen we see Allen Ginsberg, Gregory Corso and Peter Orlovsky, among others. Another treat is the music by David Amram.

Kerouac vs Hollywood

Hollywood will dabble in just about anything, and Jack Kerouac and the Beat Generation were no exception, at least after they became famous. The results however were often quite bizarre. There will be movie excerpts, interesting facts and certainly a lot of fun.

Screen adaptations of Kerouac’s novels —  “On the Road”, dir. Walter Salles, 2012 / English w/Polish subtitles

A film adaptation of Kerouac’s cult novel ‘On the Road’. Kerouac himself wanted Marlon Brando to direct this film. Things turned out differently. To what result? The opinions vary greatly, so how about making your own?

Kerouac Today: Inspirations —  “American Joyride: 100 Lines for the Kerouac Centenary”, dir. Tom Knoff, Kurt Hemmer

Written specifically for the event of Jack Kerouac’s 100th birthday, this movie will be screened in Poland for the first time. Our last meeting will also feature some surprises!

The project is supported by funds from the “Creative Scholarship of the City of Kraków”.
